tach reading low, or is it?

i'm in the process of swapping to a cluster with the gauge pack, from the dummy light cluster in my firebird. just took it for the first rip tonight, but the tach didn't seem to be working right.

the idle red correct at 900rpm, and it also seemed to be pretty correct with me at 2100rpm at about 110kph. the issue is that when i would mash the gas and run the car up to what feels like what would be redline, the tach will only go as far as 4000rpm. it also climbs very slowly even though i can hear the engine picking up the revs faster.

the car is an 86 v6, and the other cluster is out of a wrecked 86 v6.

does this sound like a common problem, or do you figure the tach is infact reading accurate? is there any way for me to test this?

The stock gauges arent very accurate to begin with.

maybe so, but not getting within almost 2k of redline?

is there a way to recalibrate the tach at all that anyone knows of, or any other remedies?

you could send the tach out for a rebuild but it would be easier and better to get a good guage. mine is roughly 300 off so i plan to install an autometer some day.

bringing this back as after a cluster swap, i have the same problem, above 2500 rpms it rises real slow and sometimes just sticks at an rpm until i touch the needle. The needle moves all the way around its clocking smoothly when i move it by hand. Could a weak electrical connection be the problem or is my tach bad?

mine is way off, it reads about 4500 at idle and shoots over past 7k at what i think is about 2500, can you fix these tachs or is it hopeless? should i just buy an aftermarket?
