Hatch Brake Light on 1986 question
Hey everyone,
Gotta '86 Camaro and of course that year they have the big brake light at the top of the rear window. Someone replaced the hatch on my car with an '85 hatch. I have been considering putting the light back on though. I know a lot of you guys probably find the light to be ugly, but I actually like them because its makes the car so much more visible for braking. Plus it's kinda cool because it was unique to that year. My question is how that light is wired up. Does a wire for it run under the roof liner or does it run down the side of the hatch on the shocks? Also, how was the light mounted on? Where there actually holes in the glass for it or what??
Any thoughts???
Mark

On my 86 Bird, the wiring went front the contact patch that is on the rear panel plastic next to teh latch to the contact tabs that were on the hatch.
Here is a picture showing the contact patch on the rear panel,

It was grounded to the hatch shocks and was powered by the contact patch, if I remember correctly.
I no longer have the 86 hatch so I can't look at it for you. I put an 87 hatch onto the car 18 months ago.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
The glass is drilled for mounting the light, and has extra contacts there for powering it. That glass was used only on the 86's and those 87's which did not come equipped with a spoiler. Here's how mine currently looks on my Formula; that'll change when I put on the 91-92 Z28 wing this spring.

ive had a few issues with mine...
first the contact between the hatch and the latch hasta be clear. if it isnt the light doesnt work.
also, if one light goes out they all go out.
if you're nice I'll go out to my car tomorrow and take pictures for you
email me if you're really interested
