Do I need to replace the VSS wire if...

I drenched it in tranny fluid? I just replaced my VSS and when I pulled it out, more tranny fluid came out than I though would. The wire connecting into the VSS fell into the tranny fluid as it leaked out and got covered. I wiped it off as best I could and plugged it back in. Well I drove around and it seemed to work but when I was driving around the speedo wouldn't move then I got the SES light on. I checked and it's the 24 code. Do I need to replace the wire because it got covered or can anyone suggest a way to clean it off. Thanks for any info that can save me from spending $28 on a new one or searching through a boneyard 30 and below temp. Stupid winter.
