what does the tan wire on the two plug altenator go to?

It goes through a resistance wire and ends up eventually at the the fuse panel inside at the fuse labeled "fan/chg". The tan wire MUST be key controlled since it it is the one that turns the alt on and off also.

 

turns the alternator on and off...always thought they were belt driven...

 

It controls the action of the field winding. If the field is left on and the alt is not turning you will hear a buzz from the alt and it will cause the alt to fail, not to mention it will drain the battery. The only alts that are not key controlled are the so called single wire or self exciting units. Yes, they are belt driven but there is much more to them than that.
