VATS is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an 89 Formula. It was gotten from a police auction with no key or title. Idid not know it was a Vats car at the time.
I have tried everything to start this piece and it hasn't worked
as follows
- putting in a VATS Module from a 91 RS w/ key and lock cylinder
in which I had to splice the wires that ended up breaking
- resistors that are frustrating because they have a variance so
I cannot get the correct 11.7 KiloOhms.
- When the key is in the lock cylinder it reads 11.4 at the
connecter; the chip in the key reads 11.7
- Fuel injection specialties wants $150 bucks to make me a chip
w/out Vats plus the wiring harness to bypass on top of that
- The dealer wants $280 for the whole setup
- My Berreta only has 9 bullets left and that is not enough to get
my frustration out on the car!!!
Please some help me

Thanks Token, that is exactly what I needed. Now that I know the ranges of tolerance to VATS I am pretty sure it could be something else because I have been up and down that range.
The car had an aftermarket alarm on it with only one wire going to the ignition; it was already disconnected when I got the car. I thought this wouldn't matter since it was one wire, I figured
it could just be information for the alarm that the key was in the ignition and to turn off. I will check there. Iwill also jumo the starter to check it. Should have done it first but its cold out.
In answer to Danno's question I don't think this car has a security
light; if it does it does not come on.
All your help is greatly appreciated; his is a real nice car except the paint and the fact it won't start; it looks just like the formula
on the Message Board Icon.

I just bybassed my vats system. However my camaro has an aftermarket security system as well that includes a starter disable. I still have to hit the button on the remote to to start the car. It might help if you reconnect it.

it was mostly disconnected when I got the car; plus no remote.
How would it disable the starter and how can it be reversed?

Ok well first I am going to asume that when you got the system out of the 91, you got the key, key cylider, and VATs module. If you didn't get the module then that is your first problem. I had gotten a diagram of the wiring but I couldn't find the link to send you. It buried in Google somewhere. You should be able to trace the wires from the cylinder and find it.
About disabling the aftermarket security system I don't know. I didn't go that far. I got my car running after the Vats thing. However my aftermarket system is a GM. There is a dealer installed system that will disable the starter irregardless of the VATs. Your local dealer can help you with that. I usually just pump the guys in the parts department for details. They helped me with the VATs. Check the module under the dash to see if you can see any model #'s. I will be happy to check mine if it will help. Also I will share info ( #'s and such) off my remote if that will help.

Ok I see you said you got the module on the original post. I also read in one of the many articles I found that blow or missing fuses can also affect the VATs system.

This might sound dumb, but my key ended up being very worn and wouldn't work. i had to have another key made so the system would work properly. It didn't look very worn, but the pellet contacts were just about flat with the key.
