87 Rear Hatch Lift will not work!

I have done everything in my IROC except the electronics

I am having problems with my rear hatch lift. It was recently working on and off, depending on it's mood, then it went out all together. I have checked all fuses that I know of, but I don't claim to be an electrician. I bought a relay for it yesterday, but not sure where the original is located to replace it. I don't know if the motor is bad or if it is the relay or sending unit.

At the local shop a guy told me to bypass the relay and apply power to the motor and see if it is working there or not. I don't want to damage the motor if it is still good. Any one else have this problem or know of a solution short of forking out 175 dollars for a new unit. And I did depress the button that makes the hatch go up and down I appreciate any help on this.

The hatch relay is mounted on the back of the parking brake assembly under the center console.

Yes, it is also wired into the park neutral switch for safety purposes so that you won't accidently pop the hatch while the car is in gear. If the gear is not fully in park or neutral the hatch won't open. It is wired into the ACC fuse for its power. Other than that, the connectors on the relay and the hatch release switch.
