82-89 guages are mechanical, correct?

I'm looking into putting in all new electonic guages, and I really have no idea how it all wires up. I'm not real worried about the accessories, but the how does the speedo and tach work? I know VSS effects the computer, so what do I do about that?

Like I said, I'm a newbie to this, so if they seem like obvious questions, that's why.

82-89 camaro speedo is/was mechanical(cable), everything else is electric

 

I am planning on putting a new digital gauge cluster in my car, Its an 84. I also am going to put a t56 in it. Does the Dak SGI-5 box convert the digital signal to mech. or just the digital to the same digital signal 89-92 camaros use?
