Good question on aftermarket gauges.

This is what I got guys. I bought a cheap set of Eques? gauges. Something along those lines anyway. Instead of a volt gauge it uses an Amp gauge. The question I have is how does this hook up. I have the old style alternator, with the plug with two wires. One red, and one another color. I was told that the gauge has to be hooked to the second wire. Might work, but the gauge has a (-) and a (+) terminal on it. Also, when I cut and tested the other wire, it shows voltage coming from the firewall, but not from the alternator. I figured it would be the other way around, because the alternator is linked to the batt, but I guess not. Any ideas guys??

That other wire is tan/white and goes from the alternator to the FP-FAN fuse on the fuse panel and also goes to the coolant fan relays. The red wire is a fusible link going to the starter solenoid.

I guess what is really messing me up is the other wire, the tan and white one, shows voltage coming from the fuse panel. I thought it would be the other way around. When I measure the half from the alternator nothing. When I measure the side from the firewall, it shows 12 volts. Damn weird I guess. Hey, While I'm here. Starter has three posts. One labeled "s" one labeled "R" and the main power. I have a purple wire connected to the "s" and the two red wires that are connected together into one connector, they come from the front of the car, are connected to the main power. As is the line from the alternator from above. I have the battery connected to the main post, and I was wondering where does the wire from the post on the back of the alternator go? I'm not sure if this stuff is hooked up right, but with the battery in everything works. I havent started yet, Im trying to get everything done before I start up and break in the new engine.

The wire for the small post on the back of the alternator is a 4 guage red/black wire that goes to the positive cable on the battery. It will look like this cable although the cable in this picture is routed wrong

Thats cool. That is where I thought it would go. I've found that many people (myself included until now) who work on cars a lot dont know things like this. Mainly because the mahority of the time you are replacing a component and hooking back up, everything is there. When you build it a charging/starting system, you learn how to hook everything up and why. I still dont understand why the tan/white wire would show power coming from the fuse panel. Instead of from the alternator.

Because the tan/white wire also goes to the coolant fan relays which also have a fusible link going to the starter solenoid that is also hot.
