Need help with Neutral Safety Switch problems
Need help with Neutral Safety Switch problems. UPDATE
Hi all,
My brother has a 91 Camaro RS with a 305 and 4 speed auto trans. Ever since he bought the car he has had intermittent starting problems. Not to long ago he tried to start it and got nothing. The gauges and lights worked, and the battery was fine. Eventually, I found out that it was the neutral safety switch. I replaced it and the car was o.k. for about a month. Then the neutral safety switch went again. I replaced it once again and within in a couple days it has gone bad again. Does anybody know what would cause this? Whoever worked on this car before hacked the wiring up pretty bad. They striped one of the wires going to the NSS and twisted a seperate wire around it. I don't yet know what that wire goes to. I think it went to a car alarm. The wire they stripped was an orange/black wire. I believe it goes to the ECM. I think i've ruled out the starter as well as the VATS. I hooked a jumper across the starter and it works. I've also used the spare key in the ignition. The security lights pops on for a couple of seconds and goes out like it should. I haven't been able to find my DMM and I need to get a fuse for my test light so I haven't been able to track down any possible shorts. I'm not sure if it helps but the wire for the trunk release has also been cobbed up. The trunk release worked for a short time and no longer functions. Other wires under the dash have also been cobbed. If anyone knows why the NSS would continue to go bad I would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

the saftey switch cant take a large and/or sustained current draw thru it.
most likely, you have somthing hooked up thats pulling power thru the switch, burning it up.
trace the wires and remove anything that tapps into it.

If that orange/black wire goes to pin "B" of the park/neutral switch. It goes from there to pin "N" of the C207 connector and from there to pin "D16" of the ECM for the Park/Neutral signal from the ignition.
The orange/black wire does go to pin B. There was a light red wire tapped into it. I took the stereo out and found that it wasn't connected to anything which is what I suspected. It was resting on a metal bracket under the stereo. I pulled it out, cleaned and soldered the wire where they tapped into it. Unfortunately, no one has the switch locally. I should hopefully know by tomorrow if that was the problem. I'm assumming that wire was grounding out to that metal bracket. Does that sound logical to either of you? I truly appreciate the help.
WOO HOO
I found the problem. It appears as though the stereo installers at Curcuit City may have knocked the starter relay loose when they installed the XM radio in the car. Not they're fault though the rocket scientist who previously worked on the this car just left it dangling behind the kick panel. I was able to fix about 4 or 5 other problems while chasing this down though so it was beneficial. Many thanks to trickster, mrdude_1, and a few other knowledgeable members, whose names escape me right now, for quick responses and great suggestions. Your help in this and many other similar posts enabled me to find the source of the problem and saved me alot of trouble and money. I hope I can return the favor someday.
