Charging Problme!!!

Last night i was coming home from my girls friends house and all the way home my charging gauges looked higher than normal, anyways it jumps all the way from 13 to about 17-18 It made my headlights and my cluster lights brighter and my Alpine Deck stop play music? Is my Alt going out?? PLZ HELP!!!

sounds like it

if you drive it mugh overcharging, you will need a battery too

Yes, it does sound like your alternator is going out. Take it out of the car and have it tested at an auto parts store, most of them do the test for free. I would also get another battery like Dave Y has suggested, with the voltage spiking that high it wasn't doing your battery any good.

It's rare for the gen to full field meaning it will overcharge to that extent. You may simply have a bad battery that is intermittently opening causing the regulator to apply more field current. What you describe sound like the gen full fields momentarily then the internal control takes over and backs it back down. Also could be simply a corroded connection. Before you start ripping out parts give all the connections a visual, could be that simple.
