Fuel Pump Circuit Problem
Last week I was on my way to a show with Redraif, and her car cut off as if it ran out of gas; it had just been filled up. Anyway, we soon realized the fuel pump wasn't coming on (its an AC Delco replacement, installed it about a year ago), but unfortunately on the side of the road with few tools and no manual we couldn't fix it. After towing the car to the hotel, and consulting a manual, we jumpered the G terminal on the ALDL and the pump came on. We replaced the fuel pump relay (it was original), then the computer, with no change. The car still wouldn't turn on the fuel pump on its own. We have yet to find any issues with the wiring, but the manual (Haynes) refers to an inline fuse in the fuel pump circuit. Anyone know where its located, it its there at all, or have any ideas what may be wrong? Possibly the prom? Since we were a LONG way from home, I temporarily tapped into the orange wire going to the oil pressure/fuel pump backup relay and ran a fused wire to the battery. It got us home, and is doing fine, but I want to fix the actual problem rather than rely on my McGyvering.

IIRC, Redraif's car happens to be the same as mine in which it has the V6 engine, in which case, the fuel pump fuse is on the opposing side of the engine compartment from the battery, mounted in two weatherpack connectors that seem to attach to nothing (since they are nothing other than covers, this is true). One is for the MAF, I believe, and the other is for the F/P and ECM. However, if the ECM still works, this fuse may still be good since it protects both the fuel pump and ECM from electrical spikes. Check the oil pressure switch as well. This acts as a cut-out switch that will cut the current flowing to the ECM if the oil pressure drops for any reason-it might be going bad.

Hello LT1guy,
That fuse that Maverick H1L is referring to is on the right fender well in a 2.8L 86 firebird and should be the same in an 87 firebird if I read mavericks post right about what she has. There are actually two fuses there, one is for the fuel pump in-line fuse and the second one is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) in-line fuse. On the 2.8L 86 firebirds there is also a fuel pump switch located on the left side of the engine a little below the oil pressure switch/sender. Not sure about the 87 models.

At least the system should be that way... I do remember her having a V6 sometime in the past, whether she swapped in a V8 or not, I don't know, but that's where the fuse is.

This is LT1guy, over at Redraif's house. I should have been more specific as far as what she has (was 2.8, but now 3.4...wiring was unaltered though). I know exactly where you mean, never realized there were fuses isnside though. I'll check it out, and replace the oil pressure/fuel pump switch. Thanks a lot!
