Radiator Fan wiring?

Ok, I'm having trouble with my radiator fan, it stopped turning on the other day (it's wired to turn on with the engine, and shut off when the engine is turned off). And, I have been over heating because of it. I'll go ahead and say this, I know my way around vehicles a little bit (enough to usually get by), but I know hardly ANYTHING about wiring.

My main question here, is how do I wire my fan back up to turn on all time time like it used to? I am horrible at wiring, but I can manage a splice or two. Hardly anything in my car is original, so wiring diagrams will probably not help me. Do I just put one wire to the battery and one wire to a ground? I can test wires to see which ones turn on with the engine (I have a screwdriver thingy that lights up when touched to a wire with power), so that I don't have the fan running when the engine is off. I just want to get this "rigged" so that I can drive it to a friends house or somewhere to get this done correctly. And also, just to wire up the fan to make sure the fan isn't the problem.

here is the little box thingy that the fan wire goes into. The peg that is burned out looking is the wire that splits off and goes to either the power, or the ground, I can't remember. Is this thing broken? or is this not bad. So, can I just bypass this to turn my fan on? what does this thing do?

I think the fan wire goes into the middle peg, I can't remember that either but in any case the other side just slips in, so they all go in the right spot no matter what. Other wires go in and out of the part that clicks into this little box, going off in a few directions and get lost in the huge wrap of wires.

Well, that is the coolant fan relay and that well done pin there should be the one that comes off the alternator and branches off to the FP-Fan fuse in the fuse panel.

It should, I would also check the pins in the connector that plugs into it.

ahh nuts. I didn't even think to look at the other side. looks like it's all melted in there

Looks like I'll have to buy 2 new connectores (or as a set) then rewire both of them?

Junkyard is cheaper and that connector is used in a lot of places in the engine bay.

well... the nearest junk yard is miles away, the nearest parts store is just a block an a half away. I'll see how much it is brand new (can't be much, right?) I don't mind buying a new one, I just hope I can wire it back up correctly!

thanks for all your help! I appreciate it!

Just do it one wire at a time and it won't be a problem. And as far as the junkyard goes, just think of all the other goodies you might find there.

Ok, I have the new connector. The problem is, that the wires are arranged different.

On the old connector, it's 2 wires on the top, 3 wires on the bottom. The new connector has all 5 wires right in a row.

So, how do I wire up the new relay connector thing? Does the order particularly matter? (I would think so).

Here is a picture.

anybody know? is there a particular order they should stay in? or can any wire just go to any port in the new connector?

I'd like to do this tomorrow (Saturday), but I don't know which wires go where. anyone know?

thanks!

How are the pins in the old connector labeled? Are they alpha or numeric? If they are numeric, the alpha equivalent would be like this: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, & E=5.

ahhh, ok! they wern't labled as clearly as I though they should have been! I cleaned off the old connector and found the lables.

it's

A C
F E D

There is no B wire, and the C wire has been cut.

I'll wire that up today! Thanks Trickster! You have been a big help

Well, the new connector didn't have a lable "F", and the old one didn't have a lable "B", so in stead of A D E F, I did A C E D just sliding the wires down the line... everything is working HAH! I wonder if those other wires just go nowhere? I know one goes to a little circle thingy, then splits off to the battery positive and the alternator. The other 2... I have no clue where they go :lala:

anyway, my fans are running now, and the temperature is back down again! thanks!
