180 Amp Alt to Batt Cable Help

my stock 105 amp crapped out on me and ive decided to go with a new 180 amp to replace it!!! i konw i have to run new 4 ga wire and thats not a prob but im running into another one.

as you can see in the pic the original alt wire runs into a black cylinder with another small wire from the main connector. then after that cylinder the alt wire runs to the battery and another smaller wire runs from the cylinder to the connector. im guessing the cylinder might be a reisitor or something.

my questions are what is that small cylinder and can i just cut where there is the yellow line (on the pic running from the alt before the cylinder) and splice my new 4 ga wire to that leaving the original black cylinder intact?

sorry the pic is junk!!!

I'm not sure what the cylinder is, I've wondered about that myself. I am, however, guessing it's a splice point for various gague wire, like splicing multiple 12 gauge wires together.

You can also run your new wire, in parallel, to the battery. Put a fuse on the new wire, just before the battery. That would work without having to splice wires.

Actually, that black cylinder is a fusible link for that alternator wire and the wires leading off of it.

Ack! Another fusible link masquerading as a rubber joiner!

Does anyone have a map showing the location and amperage of 3rd Gen fusible links?

This would be of great value to avoid chopping something valuable out of the wiring system and also aid people intending to replace fusible links with big fuses.

ok, its a fusable link but can anyone answer my main question? can i cut the wire from the alt before the link, splice my 4 ga. wire to the alt and be okay? the new alt has to have that huge wire but i want to make sure my cutting and splicing will still suffice.
