I have a digital mulit meter, and it only has a miliAmp meter on it. is it gonna hurt to check current on the alternator with it, or should I fond an actual Amp meter.

Get a AMPmeter or go to Sears and get one of their Craftsman Engine Analyzers that has the function for checking amperage on the alternator. Runs around $50.00 - $60.00 but well worth it since it also has the function for checking the RPM's off the ignition coil and charging voltage.
