fan trouble HELP PLEASE!!!

Both of my fans have stopped working. When I purchased the car I noticed a red wire running from the drivers side fan to the fuse box. It looks like this has caused the fuse box to pretty hot. The guy I bought the car from said that he installed a Hypertech switch on the block but it isnt working. Neither of the fans will even come on when the air is running. The only fan that does work is the blower motor. Please help I can't even drive to town without the car overheating.
Thanks
Matt

It sounds like the previous owner or owners tried to jury rig the fans to run constantly. Do you have the single or dual fans on your car?

It has the dual fans. I checked and it does have the Hypertech sensor in the block. What gets me is neither one of the fans will work unless I run it straight wired. I am going to run it on a toggle switch tonight so that I can drive to work tomorrow. I want it to be wired correctly. I hate things that are half a**ed. Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

matt, up on your relays by the brakes, are your wires all chopped up from there? there should be 3 relays there - one for the fuel pump, two for the fans. that is where the power wire to the fans come from. maybe you can start there and trace them to see where they now go and/or were possibly cut. sorry if you've already done this, just trying to help. your power wires are black, one fan has a red stripe, the other purple stripe.

Matt, I had exactly the same problem, sh*tty wiring from the PO who did not know how to fix a bad relay and rewired the fans himself.
I have the same year car and know those wires by heart, feel free to call me (email me for the number) and I'll walk you through your wiring over the phone. As long as you have some basic electrical knowledge and a test light, we can solve it in one night.

None of the wires are chopped up. He had just stuck a wire in the fuse block. You can see several hot spots on the fuse panel. I am hoping that these hot spots are not what is causing my problem. Thos morning my power windows quit working and the car is not charging. I checked the alternator and it is fine. This thing is driving me nuts. I just keep taking deep breaths and counting to ten.
Thanks
Matt

Check to see if there is a fuse in the fuse block for the FAN or FP-FAN. Your brown (tan/white) wire in the alternator connector goes to the fan relay and the "FAN" or "FP-FAN" fuse and is part of the charging system.

that happens to be one of the areas in the fuse block that has no power. Now what?

Did you check it with the key in the run position? It is only hot in the run position.

Okay, loook at the bulkhead connector on the drivers side underneath the dash, there should be a brown wire coming out of pin "G8" there that runs to the "FAN" fuse connector on the fuse panel. The brown wire on the engine side of the connector goes to the alternator & pin "D" of both coolant fan relays if you have the dual fan set-up. You can do a continuity check by checking the brown wire from the alternator to the brown wire at the fan relay connector with the multimeter set to OHM's. You can do the same thing from the alternator to the "FAN" fuse connection on the fuse panel with the key in the OFF position. Check both sides of the connection.

Well I dropped the Z off at a friends garage. He thinks that he can figure it out. He checked everything that he could with a test light and is going to check for continuity in the morning. Everyone keep their fingers crossed for me. I pray that it doesn't cost alot.
