Code Reader question

When i rev my engine the sel comes on and then i will put the car in drive and drive for maybe 3 seconds and it turns off. so i want to get a code reader but i dont know where to get one or what it is called.

Its called a paperclip. You straighten it out then bend it into a U shape. Remove the ALDL cover by the driver's right knee and with the ignition off you put the paperclip ends into the top RH 2 pins of the ALDL and turn the car on (DO NOT START IT). You should hear some clicking in the engine compartment and the fan will come on. Now watch the check engine light, it will flash code 12 3 times...as in: flash (long pause) flash,flash. After it does that 3 times it will begin flashing out any stored codes (3 times each). Example... flash, flash (long pause) flash, flash, flash... That would be a code 23.
After flashing all of the stored codes it will go back to 12. Turn the ignition off and remove the paperclip (put it in the glove box for future use).

well i did the paper clip thing and i got the code 24 i was wondering if you knew what that was?

Code 24(vss) and 34 (egr) are 2 codes I know of that can "go away" on their own and turn the check eng light off.
