RPM guage went crazy ?

Engine: 3.1 V6..stock exept v8 intake
Transmission: 700r4
RPM guage went crazy ?
well...today i went out and started my car and touched the gas and the RPM guage completely redlined when i know the revs werent more than 2500...yesterday i replaced the plugs and i have a new battery...what could be causeing it ?
