what's this for

Sorry no pics. I had my console out yesterdat to install a new shifter. I disconnected all the wiring to the trim plate and when I went to put everything back, I noticed a 6 pin (I think) connector with multiple color/size wires, that I couldn't remember where it went. It is taped (like 6 inches down) to the cigarette lighter wires. I thought I remembered disconnecteing this but I could be wrong. When I looked at the connector some of the pins looked like they were used (clean and shiney) and 2 didn't (dirty and full of crap). Well, I put everything back, except that one, and everything seemed to be working properly. I own a service manual but that was no help. Is it just an unused connector, like for an option I dont have, or what? this ones got me stummped.

Is your car an automatic or manual? On some of the pontiac third gens, they would include the wiring for both the manual and automatic transmission shifters. If it is what I think it is, that would be the connector for the Park/Neutral switch for an automatic shifter. The wire colors should be something like this.

Pin "A" = black/white
Pin "B" = orange/black
Pin "C" = dark blue
Pin "D" = light green
Pin "E" = purple
Pin "F" = yellow

The car is a manual and that makes sense. LOL. The next time I have it apart I will check. Thanks for your help.
