Battery Ground to Body, A Burning Inferno?

ok, my ground wire from the battery to the body has a funny habbit of frying. i just replaced the alternator and got it all hooked up(it wasnt running because the positive battery wire was not conected to alternator) there is a wire coming from the negitive battery terminal to the body. and now under repeated cranking (after flooding it) the ground wire went up in smoke, and the insulation burned off in some places.

You need to closely inspect the negative battery cable that is grounded to the engine. Almost all the cranking and charging current is suppoesed to flow through that, and obviously is not.

Either that, of get yourself some very good extinguishers.

problem solved

i put the wire from the + battery cable to the alternator on and then it still ran funny so i checked the thick ground that goes to the alternator mounting bracket and it was loose so i tightened it and now it runs good.

if there's too much resistance, the wire will heat up pretty quick. especially if its something carrying a lot of power. make sure connections are tight, and all connection points are free of paint, rust, corrosion, etc. it can make a big difference.
