additional cig lighters...?

I was going to put an inverter in my car but it would be used for powering my laptop only and i read a post that said it was a loss to bump up the power just to bump it back down for laptop. I was pondering this while replacing my dash bulbs and realized why should i not just splice new wires into the ones for the cig lighter and buy two new cig lighter holders from a junk yard or something and mount them in a remote and more convenient location? I was thinking of running the wires through the center console and removing the rear ashtray and putting them there. I dont think there should be a power issue with this being that you can buy an adapter to change one cig lighter into two or three and this essentially only a hardwired version of that without a huge thing in an awkward position in the dash. Input is appreciated.

It should work, just make sure you get the polarity right when you wire in the new sockets. I am not sure if it matters, but you don't want to find out the hard way it does. Don't plug too much stuff into the circuit, a laptop is fine.

Exactly my thoughts. I'll use the same gauge wire or maybe a tad bigger and if I can get the new ones from a maro the wires will be color coded makingit easier if not i'll trace em into the element itself to match em up. Thanks. Also I was thinking what is the best way to splice the wires in this case?

I used wire tap-ins to put in a thermostat fan switch and they were a lot easier than soldering. Tap-ins
