i think someone lost my cruise control

i have an 83 firebird se,2.5 5 speed, but i have the stuff under the hood for cruise but i dont have controls on the turn signal.
i currently dont have taillights and i was tracking down the problem and i replaced the stop light switch and it was one for cruise control, plus the tail lights are routed throu the turn signal, so do i need to buy a turn switch with or without cruise?

Hi,
You need the correct turn signal stalk. I bet the modulator is also bad underneath the hood. The cruise contol switch on the turn signal stalk would go bad and cause automatic resumption of the cruise control(not a good thing to happen).

If the modulator was also bad, the car would accelerate to a very high speed. Had this happen to me back in the 80's

So most likely the orginal owner of the car pull out the turn signal stalk and replaced it with one that didn't have the switch.

To remove the turn signal stalk just pull it stright out. To install the correct turn signal stalk, the steering wheel will have to be pulled so that the wire can be fed though the steering column. The wires from the turn-signal stalk will plug into an connector under neath the dash.

I bet when you remove the steering wheel that you will find the wires to the turn signal stalk.

I have seen the both parts at Advance Auto and Autozone. They may still be available from the dealer.

Cruise Control is not hard to repair if you have the steering wheel puller. You can go to AutoZone and rent the steering wheel puller. I do not think you should scrape it. Its an easy repair.
The hardest part of the repair will be pulling the steering wheel.

If you donot have the Haynes repair manual for our cars, then you should get it. It has wiring diagrams, full instructions on how to repair and adjust the cruise control etc.

Actruely the cruise control is vary relieable. I have more then 260,000 miles on my 82 Firebird. I have seen a lot of stuff go bad over the years. The only repeat failurs that I every had was the carb, transmission and water pump. I solved the transmission durablity problem back in 92 when it was rebuild by AMMCO. I solved the water pump issue buy getting an OEM water pump directly from the dealer. I solved the carb problem with installation of TPI.

Its all about what you want to do with the car. If you want to rip out everything because you think is not useful then maybe you should sell the car. These cars are vary old, and need a lot of tender loving care to keep them running good.
