88 GTA No Start VATS?

o.k. ive been trying to diagnose my problem through past posts but i am still coming up short.
1988 gta 305 5 speed
the other day i parked my car and the next day i came out to start it and it would not turn over, everything works fine but car wouldnt crank so i just let it roll down the driveway and bump started it and it fired and ran fine all the way to work but the security light stayed on all the way to work.
Bump started it home, no security light, ran fine.
Bump started it to work ,no security light, car ran fine.
Tried to start it with key , started 1 time, ran fine turned it off,no start again.
Bump started it home, security light stayed on , car ran fine.
Where is the location of the start relay , wire colors etc?
Where do i start?
I can get someone with test equipment but what do i have them test?
It seems like all the posts i've seen were for 89-92 f bodies or automatic transmissions.
Thanks in advance
Jeff

The starter enable relay is behind the driver's side kick panel.

Something in your VATS system is jacked. If VATS is functioning properly, it is impossible to bump start the car. VATS does more than just disable the starter. The ECM will not fire the injectors until VATS tells it to. If the security light is staying on, the car should not run.

Do you have the stock chip in the ecm? If the car runs with the security light on, it seems like you've got a chip with VATS disabled.

Check your clutch switch while you're at it.

How do i check the clutch start switch?
How do i check starter?
Not sure about factory chip.
car has had lots of mods like 160 deg stat , fuel pressure gauge,
alarm and keyless entry installed and then removed (cobbled)
i also read if you put in a 160 degree stat you have to change the chip is that correct?

If you have had an aftermarket alarm system installed and hacked out, that is probably the root of your problems. In regards to the 160 degree thermostat, on some performance chips like Hypertech they recommend using a 160 degree thermostat for spme of their products to function properly.

Ive had this car for 3 years without a problem so why now ?

Ive been reading this forum since i bought the car and it has saved me tons of money in repairs for other stuff but this one has me baffled.

Have a look at the wiring diagram in this thread. You probably need to bypass the starter enable relay. You'll want to connect the large dk grn wire to the large yellow wire.

The problem you're having is probably a result of the alarm system that was chopped out.

Here is the diagram for the '88 Passkey system, you might also have a Passkey box going bad as well.

Thanks for all the help...
Problem solved , local stereo guy pulled all the former alarm wiring out and made sure everything is wired properly then put the quick fix on with the $1.00 resister so I'm on the road.
Dont know what broke ? lock cyl wire? oh well thanks again.

I was wondering why there was a resistor hanging from the dash on my 89 IROC!!!
I will have to post the pics of this cars electrical nightmare. House wiring, toggle switch wipers etc etc, but for $400 why not
