A typical DVM can be pretty slow updating the display, so trying to test the functionality of the ESC/EST system with one can be nearly impossible. If you have a timing light, you can test the ESC operation by observing the timing marks while inducing a knock at the sensor. You should also see a significant timing change by simply disconnecting and reconnecting the ESC bypass connector.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to see if Im getting any spark retard while driving. Can I run a jumper wire from the spark retard wire and tell that? I dont have a scanner and want to buy a few other things before I get one.

That could be a tough one (without a scanner). Disconnecting the EST while driving really won't prove much.

If you are attempting to determine the optimal initial timing setting, you may be able to "fool" the EST by installing a resistor in place of the detonation sensor, then drive to see if you can generate audible knock, and how much. It's not the most elegant method, but might get you closer to an ideal initial timing. Data scanning is the most reliable method.

Thanks for the info Vader. Looks like my best bet is to wait till I get a scanner.
