electrical Qs

Hey guys,

Im right at the end of my build and Im cranking
the engine to get the oil up where it needs to be.
valve covers, plenum, runners, EGR equipment, &
distributor cap are off the engine

as of now, oil is prevelant uptop on all the rockers,
lifters are brand new and are doing thier job ..
rockers adjusted and everything looks smooth

but the problem is the starter, when I crank the motor
.. I just trip the solenoid out with a bolt to crank it.

it doesnt make a sound when I turn the key inside
the car. The starter is wired correctly and power to
the starter is obviously there ..

is this because the top end is not assembled and
grounds to the back of the heads are not connected??

I figured the grounds to the heads didnt matter
when cranking the motor ..
I have the fuel pump and injector fuse pulled so
no fuel can get uptop..

most but not all sensors are connected, and
power is inside the car, the door buzzer works
and headlights move up, but they fail to return to
the closed position.. (relay or ground wire??)

anyway,
I want to be able to crank for oil to travel without
tripping the solenoid with a bolt everytime
(the bolt gets really hot!!!)

I figured most problems will go away when
everything is assembled ..but the starter should
actuate without a problem ..

whats going on here ..??

From what i've seen on a neon before, it does matter if the grounds are not connected. It sounded like the battery was low. Ended up being that the engine ground was disconnected.

I concluded that the grounds are necessary..
after reconnecting the starter solenoid, I tightened
up the loose grounds to the two heads while I was
down under the car ..

after I did that .. I had a fully functional Trans AM,
flip lights worked, inside cluster worked, power windows
worked .. the whole car works !!

oh ..starter works by key, and the flip lights
problem is solved

I feel dumb

takin a auto class in electroics , the car's electrical system works on a "common ground" so if you dont have all the block ground's connected, the engine aint gonna work right atleast thats how i understand it

Its just those little grounds wires (2 or 3 of em)
seems rather insignifigant .. know whatta mean??

They play a much bigger part than I thought
I honestly thought they had nothing to do with
cranking the motor for oil travel .. "wrong"
