whacked out speedo

The speedometer on my 85 TA is acting funny. I finally got the right gears in my T5 so that it reads at least pretty close to my actual speed. The thing works perfect (aside from the bouncing) through the first 4 foreward gears, and in reverse. But as soon as I shift into 5th, it freaks out. At first it will flop all over the place, 0-whatever speed I happen to be going, then it will settle down somewhere around 45-60mph.

The problem is that as long as I am accelerating or holding constant speed, it's reading slower than I'm actually going, sometimes by as much as 60mph. The harder I put my foot down, the more it works its way to zero.

In order to get it to tell me my actual speed, I have to either let off he gas completely and decelerate, or pull it out of 5th gear. This is the only gear that it does this in. I'm thinking either the cable needs replacing or there is a slider whacking up against my speedo gears in the tranny. Anyone have any insight as to what's going on?

does anyone know how difficult it would be to switch over to an electric speedo? or even if it would it be worth it?
