help please-rocker/toggle switch problem
Hello,
I installed a set of fog lamps on the front of my z28 last year. It had a lighted(red) rocker switch under my dash...never had a problem with it, until last week while exiting my car my foot caught the switch, and broke the plastic mounting. I went to NAPA and got a new lighted red toggle switch to replace it, mounted it and wired it like the schematic on the side of the switch said, and it blew the fuse. So I tried different wire combinations, and blosw it each time...here is the strange part...I wired it exactly like the old rocker switch, and it works fine...except THE TOGGLE DOES NOT LIGHT UP NOW, but the fog lamps work fine.
\ Maybe the toggle is made internally different than the rocker?, anyway here is how the rocker was wired....
these are three pronged switches. The hot wire connects on the bottom prong, the ground goes in the middle prong, and the acc wire goes on the top prong...this works perfect on the rocker and will light up my fog lamps on the toggle(but does not light up the inside toggle light).
Here is how the schematic reads on the side of the new toggele switch...the bottom prong is for ground, middle is for acc, and the top prong is for hot wire(whenever I wire it this way, it blowsd my fuse) This is the problem...have tried wiring it in different sequence, and it blows it also,, anyone have any ideas what is going on, am I connecting it wrong, or does theeis three prong switch wired differently internally and will not work with my set up?? Anyone have any ideas, appreciate, thanks, Dennis
p.s. I have c hecked and do NOT have any shorts in wiring, cause when I temporary hook it likes it was on the rocker switch, it works fine.

Positive - to 12v switched power
ACC - to B+
Negative - to known good ground
Basically, the ground is used only for the lighted part of the switch. The reason you are blowing fused is because you are unknowingly creating a "dead short." A switch is not used as a load, it is simply a path.

post script: I changed the switch back to a rocker switch, and it took care of the problem..according to an auto electrician, evidentally the toggle switch was different internally than the rocker switch, and would not work in my system, oh well, all is well now, thanks to all who replied, Dennis
