temp guage dosent work

I was driving down the road and i noticed my temp guage moving back and forth erradically, then it would get still again, and it would do this over and over again. So i pulled off the wire that goes on the temp sender and wiped it off and bent down the ears so it would go on tight, after all this it dosent work now.

it sounds like you either have a faulty sender or a shorted wire.

ive only had my motor in like 4 months now, i put in a new sender when i rebuilt it. The wire looks like it is bad shape, the outside of the wire looks a little melted. I dont know how the inside of the wire looks but ill run it down and see. Every now and then the guage will go up erradically to the motor temp but it will go back down to the bottom pretty quickly.
