wire heating up

This is my first post on these forums, ive been searchin for everything else and finding allot of great information but one of the problems im trying to trouble shoot right now I dont even know what I would search for. There is a wire that use to go through a plug with about 2 other green wires it runs RIGHT next to the transmission dipstick close enough that the plug even touches. Well it seems that the wire has heated up and melted its way out of the plug before and someone just used a butt splice. The wire is still getting very hot which im worried about catching fire the buttsplice is already turned a different color. Im wondering if anyone has any idea what this wire goes to so that I can get this fixed before my car ends up in flames. Im gonna try and get a picture of it to post up but I cant find the card for my digital camera right now. Thanks in advance
