removing smog gear= ecu problems??
Being an electronics technician i can understand how removing the smog gear from the engine would offset the performance of the ecu, but what kind of problems would i be looking at? If its not possible then where can i find a replacement ecu to work in its place?
Welcome Aboard!
Removing the emission controls can cause some problems with the ECM. However, rather than replace the ECM, it's far easier and more benefical to reprogram what you already have.
What items/systems/parts are you considering removing? And for what benefit?

I would like to remove anything and everything related to the smog emissions under the hood. im currently stationed in california where its manditory to have this stuff, but back in ny the only rule is i have to have the catylitic converter. i want my engine to breath a little better.

I have seen people use two different chips for their car. One for the smog police when it comes time for your inspection. This chip is basically a useless tune that leans out the mix and gives you nothing more than "normal" driving. Of course, this won't pass you on the visual inspection if you ever try to register in california. The other chip is obviously for performance and has been tuned to your liking. This isn't a cheap way to go but it will get rid of the smog components and keep your computer happy.

The egr, air injection, and fuel vapor canistor being removed arent going to help very much. The weight of these items is minimal, the parasitc loss on the smog pump would be offset by an idler pulley, and you will lose fuel mileage at cruising speed, egr only works under vacuum and no vacuum at wot. Unless you are looking at gaining a tenth of a second in a sanctioned racing class that you are already at the limits of rule restriction, just leave this stuff and get a chip burner and laptop, this will help you way more than stripping parts. If you just HAVE to remove this stuff for shi** and giggles, you will be in for a headache and no real gain.
