pop up lights
Ok, my lights will go up, but they wont come back down. I can hear the motors running, but they just wont go down. Any ideas?
Are you talking about a firebird? (confused since all of your info shows a camaro...)
Just reread your post - missed the fact that you hear them running - more than likely it's stripped gears. You might be able to take them apart and flip the gear to make them work. Top down solutions sells rebuild kits if that does not work
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If it is, what year? If its 88 or newer, the problem is usually the headlight switch. There's a contact that sends a signal (can't remember if it's GND or 12V, to the headlight module (by the master cyl) that puts them down. the swith contact usually fails, but can be cleaned up and readjusted without buying a new switch. I think the wire you need to check is white at the module, and if it never changes state, that's your problem. If you need more detail I can get you the exact detail.
If they are the older motors (larger ***** on top) I don't think they have the module, they have relays mounted on the motors. They usualy don't both go out at the same time. (But you know how that goes.)
On either of them, it could be stripped gears, but it usally is not both of them at the same time.

Ok, the car is an 89 formy. Sorry, i just got it and havnt changed my info.
Anyway, I turned them on and I saw this know thing right next to the light spinning, then it stopped.
If it is stripped gears, how do you go about flipping them? Also, I would like all the info you have about it.

you could go to a junkyard and see if they have any that work. you might get lucky. may have to get new ones. you can get them up and down manually there is a a stud coming up next to them under the hood with a black cap unless its missing turn them to lower or raise them if it has the caps and does nothing pull them off and turn it with some pliers. I had to raise them on the parts car i drove home at night.

If your motors are turning then you don't need new ones, and the ones at the junkyard are likely to have the same problem. You either have stripped gears or worn bushings. 99% of the time it's worn bushings, GM made them out of some gel material that hardens and turns to crumbs after a few years. Go to TDS and get the deluxe repair kit. It'll come with new bushings, gaskets, grease, and a few screws since you'll ubdoubtedly break a few of the old ones. If it does happen to be stripped gears, then you can rotate them and use the unworn threads.. they only rotate about 1/2 turn to lift the lights, so the other half of the gear should be in good condition. Either way you'll still probably need new bushings.
