are all of the 145mph speedo's electric or were some the mechanical type. When did gm go from the mechanical to electric speedo's?

My 87 IROC has the 145 MPH speedo and it's mechanical.. I think they might have went electric in 1990 when they changed the cluster style.... or was it 91, 92? Not exactly sure

correct. 90-92 is electronic. earlier model 3rd gens with an overdrive transmission have a speed sender built on to the back of the cluster, which sends the VSS signal to the computer for torque converter lockup control.
Assuming you're talking about Firebirds rather than Camaro...
The 140 speedo came out in 86. They're all electric even though in 86 you could get a mechanical speedo in the other sub-140mph clusters.

thanks for clearing that up. I think i found a good electronic one. I needed electronic due to my t56 swap.
