Multifunction Lever..
Hey,
I am trying to figure out how to replace my multifunction lever (cruise, wipers, turn signal lever)...
I have done a few searches and nothing has really helped a whole lot...
Tim Burgess wrote back in 2001..
"Remove the tilt lever (it unscrews), make sure the multifunction lever is in the center or "off" position, remove the housing cover end cap (if you have cruise control), remove the cruise control connector (if you have cruise control), remove the multifunction lever by pulling it straight out of the turn signal switch."
I tried the above but I cannot figure out how to remove the housing cover? The tilt lever unscrewed but I cannot see how the housing cover end cap comes off... does it snap on, screw on?
Also.... do all Firebirds/Camaro 82-92 have the same wire coming off the mutifunction switch that plugs into a module under the dash.. it's a 4 connector male end... this pic is what Trickster posted awhile back.... are they all like this?

I dont know how to remove mine either... I havn'e tried because I didn't buy the new arm yet, but I took a quick look and couldnt figure it out.
As far as the plugs go... any 82-92 column is interchangeable, depending on the options the vehicle has. For example: I put an 84 firebird column in my 89 camaro, but I lost cruise control & intermittant wipers, and had to bypass VATS because it didnt exist in 84.

i lost them because the new column's wiper arm and harness did not have the wires and pins in the plug.
The plugs are the same, but the wires were not in the plug for those options.

I won on eBay a good condition multifunction lever... the seller said that it came off a 88 Bird... but also said that this lever should be the same for all 86-89 Camaro's and 'Birds...
Here is the one I won..
The seller said they had a few levers and emailed me the pics of all of the connectors each one had..
Has anyone ever seen these connectors before as part of the multifunction lever on an 87 Camaro/'Bird or any 3rd Gen for that matter?
Here is the connector that I see on the wire that snakes up through my steering column and goes to what I'm assuming is the multilever.. it plugs into a female plug which is wired to another plug (I think this one goes out to the cruise control module and out to the cruise control device that's under the hood that's attached to the vaccum canister.
I am now not sure if I won the right auction or something because all of the connectors the seller emailed doesn't look like mine, unless I am only looking at one side of my connector. Maybe the multifunction switch plugs in somewhere up in the steering column???
I need some help here in figuring this out... any help would be appreciated!

My 89 firebird, 92 firebird, 87 fiero, and other 87 fiero all used same stalk I bought brand new at advance $35ish
All had same plug and none looked like what yall posted
Additionally I never could get the wire to feed thru the column, always snagged and I had to cut it and route it externally

Well from doing a search on eBay it definitely seems that there is a difference in the years of the 3rd Gens...
This one is for 90,91, and 92 Camaro's/Firebirds (along with a few other GM models) .. notice the plug..
90-92 Wiper/Cruise lever
Now have a look at the ones for the 84-89 Camaro's and Firebirds... this is definitely the one I need, same connector on the end...
84-89 Camaro/Firebird Cruise/Wiper lever
Seems that the person I won the auction off of has the ones for the 90-92 Camaro's... I asked specifically if this one would work on my 87 Camaro and they said it would, so I went and bid... I am now in negotiation with them... luckily I guess I only paid $8 for the auction.. I am seeing if they can give me some other Camaro part of equal value... my money order is already sent so worse case scenario is that they ship me the one that is no good to me and I sell to someone that doesn't have cruise... it will still work as a good delay wiper/turn signal lever
... buyer beware

That's good info on the different stalk switches as I will eventually have to replace mine.Wipers act up every so often and I've traced it down to it.When you go to replace your stalk;1)tie fishing line or picture hanger wire to the connector of your old stalk before you pull it out the column-make sure you have enough line to pull up thru the column and hang out both ends.2)the stalk itself just pulls out of the column - it snap fits, make sure the wiper switch is in the off position,3)the new stalk will have an alignment tang like the old one - look into the cavity where it goes so you'll know how to line it up,4)tie the wire/line to your new connector and feed the wire down the column before you install the stalk - take your time and it will go in -spray silicone or armor-all down the length of the wire to help it slide,5)then push the stalk back into the cavity in the column and plug the connector back in.
One other thing I want to ask did the early 3rd Gen('82-'84)Camaro use a stalk with either the chrome or black base part?Or were thay all black?Mine has the chrome base stalk and it looks to have been in there awhile,if it's not original.

Hi 87ROCZ. Did you find out where the cruise control plug goes? I removed my column and i have the same male plug dangling from my column and have no idea where it goes. Cheers

Wow, that was 9 years ago since I wrote that post! Happily I can say that I still own my 87 IROC, but I gave up on reattaching my cruise control. I went through two engines since then at the track Hahahaha
