New alt. NO volts

OK.

everything seem fine and then on my way back from a trip the car starts to run hot. turns out the fans are not working so i look for that and find out the relay is fried. by that i mean that part of the plastic on the inside is melted. so i go down and get a new relay but the fans will not come on. i did do the "jump" i.e. hot wire the leads and the fans do work. but they will not come on when the car is cranked unless they are hot wired and then the fans stay on even when the car is turned off.

so to get the car to the shop to find out what is going on i decide to run a switch so i can manually turn the fans on and off. i splice into the existing wires at the realy and turn on the switch. it works just fine.

next i start the car and.......it reads about 8-9 volts inside the car. not to good. i turn the car off and check the battery. it reads 11.9 volts. next i start the car and check at the battery again 11.4 volts.

according to my worthless repair manual this means the alt should be bad. take it off and head for auto zone. they test it and 3 times it passes. they offer a new one but suggest i should check the volts at the alt. before changing just to make sure.

i put the old one back on and check it at the alt. 11.2 volts at the alt. now it is time to take it off and go get a new one.

new one goes on and i still have the same problem.

ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

sounds like the alternator was fine all along and the wiring to the alternator is not telling the internal reg to up the voltage. check the brown wire coming off the 2 prong plug for problems.

I will have to agree there, the brown wire leads to the coolant fan relays and the "FAN" fuse. If you toasted the relays then you more than likely have a messed up wire somewhere in the circuit.

Thanks guys.

one other question, what/where 2 prong plug are we talking about?

alt has red and black.

Hi Trix hope all is going well for you and yours.

congrats on getting the Central Park back. Jim is a good guy and deserved to own it. Now he does.

i just knew you were going to ask that.

ok, when i was checking the fuses at 10pm with a flash light i managed to plug the one that controls the fans into the wrong slot. amazingly after it was put in the correct spot it works fine.

they need a red faced smiley 4 that one.

have a gr8 weekend!!
