Blowing tail light fuse constantly

A few weeks ago the car started this intermitten problem with blowing the 20 amp tail light fuse. Sometimes it does it constantly, sometimes it won't do it for a few days. When it dosen't do it, it seems like going over a small bump will trigger it again. It will blow the fuse and all the lighting will go out except the headlights and brake lights when I apply the pedal. The regular tail lights go out as well as the dash lights, corner lights, and headlight motors quit functioning. When I put a new fuse in with the lights off the motors drop back down. When I hit the switch everything comes on for about 2 seconds then pop, there goes the fuse again. I have been pretty much over the entire car. Replaced the headlight switch. Im getting really aggrivated. Car has never done anything like this and its getting old quick.

must not have been all over the car, cause you have a short to ground. when you drive the car the bumps must make the wire come in contact with ground or a ground wire. get a wiring diagram and trace each circuit and pay close attention to where the wire comes close metal or to the body. i had a short in the same circuit and it was under the dash, but yours may not be.

put a 25A fuse in instead and see if it blows. Otherwise, it sounds to me you may have a bad headlight motor. If it works for more than 1/2 second you do not have a wire short to ground, it should blow instantly.

It blows as soon as the motors go up. I went through 3 boxes of fuses, even used 25 and 30 amp fuses. This is the killer part of it. Its intermitten. I went out there yesterday and hit the switch 3 times and everything worked fine. Nothing popped. Even when it blows them the headlight motors work. Its not instantly when it pops. It pops as soon as the motors stop going up. I was thinking it might be the big relay on the firewall but i disconnected it and it still blew the fuse. If the headlight doors are already up say when it blows the previous fuse, if I turn the lights on with a new fuse and the doors are already up it will blow it then too but after a second or so. I just want it fixed. This is pissin me off.

If you would like to find this problem quickely and cheaper than paying a shop to diagnoss it, invest in a small amp clamp. Put a halogen lightbulb in place of the blowing fuse. Be sure to add a fuse in series with the bulb. On the one wire from the halogen lightbulb, splice in an inline fuse and 2 spade terminals. Make your short detector look like this:

________20A FUSE____>
|
BULB
|
|________________>

Now that you have done this, start going around with the amp clamp following the wires of that particular cuircuit. When you find higher than normal amperage, you have found your problem. -Good luck
