Dash Wiring 87 Trans Am

can anyone help me out, i would like to get a wiring diagram for my 86 trans am so i can splice the wires for the 4th gen dash. The topic says 87 but im sure i put 86, guess not.

it was originally 5.0/manual now its 5.7/auto. i purchased the vehicle the owner already changed the motor from the original 305, how can i find out if the vehicle was originally carbureted or fuel injected, im assuming you would need to know this so i can tell what kind of wiring i have in my car?

please help,
Rough

noone did 4th gen dash swap into a thirdgen firebird?

i dont know yet, just started doing the dash swap. Check out shbox.com for 4th gen stuff and the thirdgen.org tech articles. The thirdgen.org tech articles has wiring diagrams for an 86 camaro i think.

wow. I really had a hard time finding stuff for the 3rd gen trans am to 4th gen trans am dash swap for the headlights/foglights wiring. A lot of BS and less tech there was on this. Here's what i ended up with on the 86:

Headlight/Parklight Switch
3rd gen trans am(86) to 4th gen trans am
RED-----------------------------------------RED
ORANGE-------------------------------------ORANGE
YELLOW(X2)---------------------------------YELLOW
BROWN--------------------------------------BROWN
GRAY----------------------------------------GRAY
BLACK---------------------------------------BLACK
WHITE---------------------------------------(have to put in wire...see note)

NOTE 1: The white wire's purpose is too have 12Volts when the headlights and parklights are turned off to drop the headlight motors. This doesn't exist in the 4th gen harness but you can add the wire. I'm trying to find a prong from another connector thats similar and stick the prong into the right slot. If you look at the 4th gen headlight connector like this:
_______________
|
|____|-----|____|
place the prong in the slot that is on the bottom, 2 from the right.

NOTE 2: You get the gray and black wire not from the 3rd gen headlight switch but from the connector that has the lightbulb that lights up your thirdgen headlight and dimmer switches.

DIMMER SWITCH
GREEN------BROWN
WHITE------GRAY
BROWN------GREEN/WHITE
BLACK-------BLACK

FOG LIGHT SWITCH
BLACK-----------BLACK
BROWN----------BROWN
BROWN/WHITE---YELLOW
PURPLE----------PURPLE
GRAY------------GRAY

The gray colored relays have the same prongs in the connector as the headlight switch connector does. I snagged one prong & wire from the 4th gen hatch release relay since I won't use that relay anyway.

If you want more give me specific diagrams you need, there are a TON of them and I can't post them all. And give me details as to the options the car has, like head light monitors and such, so I can get the right diagrams.

i thank you also 91camaro couldnt seem to get any help with this on this board, and most people talked about a camaro not a firebird.

as for details, my vehicle is 86 stock carbureted so no computer, power windows, manual door locks. just the basics head lights, fog lights, power trunk, rear defrost...

FYI...There were a few errors in my previous posts and I fixed them. And still haven't fully tested everything. All the gauges work and headlights/parklights but i haven't tried foglights because I dont have foglights right now.

This is how you get the dimmer to work if it doesn't work: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...4th+gen+dimmer

did you have these "certain" wires left over? on the chart above it says they are not used, but why are they there?

dark grey to me means illumination but i wonder what for

also red wire on 4th gen plug, general output, just needs to be grounded right?

I think the red wire goes to power. The unused thirdgen wires are extra grounds, skip shift or don't know what they are.

Try running your 4th gen gauge without the red wire. I can't remember for sure now if I used it for sure. If your battery gauge doesn't work then connect up that red wire.

I think you might have to splice in more than one wire for power.

well i did that already. I have 4 power on my 4th gen, but only 2 on my 3rd gen. So i spliced 2 into 1 and 2 into the other one. I was wondering if there would be an overload with 3 power wires going into 1.

Re: Dash Wiring 87 Trans Am

Can you post wiring diagrams fo 1986 Trans Am's dash lights to the headlight with motors? My parking lights will not come on unless headlights are on. Thanks for any help. It would be great to know what relay went to what part.
