Instrument Fuel Gauge Failure - 88 Formula
Instrument Fuel Gauge Failure - 88 Formula
I have a 1988 Formula 305 Van Nuys, CA
I’m having a little fuel gauge problem. One day I got in and started the vehicle and the gas gauge shot straight over to full and hasn’t moved. It is the only gauge infected. I had a friend take an ohmmeter to the electric lines that enter from the rear of the gas tank and it is not getting power at that point. Does the fuel gauge have it’s own fuse separate from the rest of the instrument cluster like the fuel pump has on the right front wheel well? I found that at the cost of a fuel pump that sounds like it has a bigger engine than the car. I’d accept any suggestions with merit.

What you should be checking for is OHM's resistance, not power. The resistance will be somewhere between "0" to "90" OHM's depending on how much fuel is in the tank. A full tank will register the higher OHM reading with the lowest reading being an empty tank. The wire that he needs to check is the pink wire and the black wire for resistance.
