1986 instrument lights

hello all.
new to the site i have searched and searched this site and all the fixes i have all ready done. so HELP. PLEASE
here it is i blew the inst fuse by doing the inevitable of wiring the stereo to the dimmer wire. now thats all fixed i have replaced the rheostat and i know have power back to my fuse box, however the fuse keeps blowing when i turn on the lights. now looking at the back of the fuse box i see that the wire that goes up to the fog lights is also attached to the opposite side of the fuse. but it is a ground and the fog lights work i dont know how this is possible. Please help i need dash lights.

do u still have the dimmer wire installed on the stereo, my 84 was doing something like that but only the lights wouldnt shut off even when the switch was off.

nope i removed the dimmer wire from the stereo and isolated it and covered it so it cant short out anymore.

Is this a firebird? If so it sounds like it would be the same problem as I had with mine like a year ago. Turns out it was the remote dimmer switch that is like on top of the steering colum if I remember right. It was a pain to change but it fixed it.

well i already thought remote dimmer and changed out the rheostat.
turns out that when i shorted out my stereo there is a gang of about ten gray wires up behind guage cluster that runs all dash lights and shifter lights ect. well when that wire shorted out by the radio it melted the tape and the glue from it shorted out the whole gang of wires. so in short i resoldered all those wires and whalla problem solved. it took me a whole saturday afternoon of tearing the dash apart. so in short dont short that wire out with the radio as so many f body owners have.
