Pop-Up Headlight problem
Pop-Up Headlight problem
I just bought this '89 Formula....Great shape for $2000. Mechanically the only thing wrong are the headlights. They will go up but won't go down without getting under the hood. I was told that there are fuses in line with those...True? And where abouts should I look for these fuses? Thanks.....

89 Firebird has a different headlight system than the prior 1982-86. On the 1987-92, the weak-link is the headlight motors, or to be more specific, what is inside the large gear. These two-wire motors have OEM gel bushings that crumble to a spoonfull of chunks. At that time the gear will just freewheel on the 3-lobe cam that is on the shaft which raises and lower the headlight bucket. I make a couple of kits to repair this problem (TDS 207280 & 209280). Once you've replaced the bushings, the next thing to fail are the headlight control modules. You can pick up a used one at a Pick-a-Part yard. Be aware that the 1987-89 Firebird used a different one than the 1990-2002. They both look the same (a square black plastic housing with the word GUIDE molded on the cover) and slip into a bracket on the firewall between the brake master booster and the windshield wiper motor.
The older three-wire motors can easily be spotted by their larger diameter **** to manually raise and lower.
