I used to have an 86 TA that developed a similar headlight problem. Here's what I learned after owning it for almost three years. First, lets discuss the headlight switch itself. This might sound wierd, but I swear this is how I got my headlights to work normally. The switch has three seperate toggles in it (not really, but I'm simplifing): headlights, parking lights, and "off". To turn them off, first turn off just the headligh portion of the switch, leaving the parking lights on by pulling that portion of the toggle out with your finger. The headlights should go off, but stay up. Then press the off button, turning off the parking lights. The doors should then close. This is how I got mine to work every time!

I then developed a similar problem where the headlights would light up, but wouldn't come up. I simply reversed the "turning off" procedure, and they worked: first turn on just the parking lights, then the headlights!

If this funky headlight switch trickery solves your problem, then the most likley problem is a remotly mounted heat sink/transistor called an "isolation relay" has gone bad. GM stopped using it in 87, so your 85 and my 86 both had one. It is mounted in the interior, slightly to the left of the radio on the metal framework of the dash. If you remove the interior trim that is below the column, you should see it. If I remeber correctly, it is a large black annodized heat sink with a large capacitor mounted in it, and a 3,4, or 5 pin connector plugged into the side.

As far as the battery going dead, I can't help you there. Sorry. Hope this helps!
