If you are asking about the brake warning lamp on the dash, there are two switches - One for the park brake, and one on the combi valve under the master cylinder. If there is a hydraulic problem and high differential pressure between the front and rear brakes, the switch on the combi valve will close.

so if my rear brakes don't work because the front brakes were done but the system didn't get bled the light will go on?
Excessive pressure differential between the front and rtear braking systems will operate the switch. If you think the problem is there, unplug the wire from the switch and see if the lamp goes off. If so, start investigating the brake hydraulic system.
