just bought, wiring nightmare

I just bought a 1990 Camaro. It runs fine and needs about the normal amount of body/interior restoration as any 1990(especially one bought for $450). I can handle most of the cosmetics but the car has several possible wiring problems that may require the expertise of someone who has been there before. The most important of these is the fact that the electric radiator fan never kicks on. The tempature guage works fine(both temperature sending units have been replaced), if I put power to the fan it does work. Is there a common problem here or do I just replace wiring. Of lesser importance is the fact that when I turn on the headlights they are constantly highbeam, the switch will turn the high beam indicator off or on but its running highbeams regardless and both turn signal indicators in the dash light also. The turn signal bulbs themselves do not lite unless I engage them, which also makes the turn signal lite on the dash for the signal I am using flash properly when the head lights are on.

I know how you feel. My 84 was an electrical mess when I got it. it seems like you have some pretty basic problems though. try grounding your radiator and then wiring the positive into the ACC on your fuse block so that your fan comes on with your accessory power. I'm not positive about the blinker issue...but it sounds like it may be the flasher unit. You could try replacing that and see if that works...and if it doesn't just take the piece back. The flasher unit is only about $8 at autozone. I'm not sure whats up with your headlights always being on high beams. Try following the wiring form the lights all the way to the fuse block and see if you can find a splice in the wire that may be causing it...or it could be in the high beam switch, The lever can be found at a junk yard or hawks, or virtually anywhere else. Those are about $10 at autozone...hope this helps.

also, welcome to the board and congrats on the recent purchase.

thnx for the suggestions on the blinkers , seem easy and cheap enuff to do on the chance it will work. Wiring the cooling fan direct to the acc block would definately work, I could probably wire in a toggle switch to keep the tempature range proper especially in the winter.

I had a switch wired into my fan, but I so often forgot to even turn it on. lol. so I just wired it direct. I don't drive mine during the winter so that's not really an issue with me. Let me know if you need anymore help. I've pretty much rewired my 84 at this point. Owner before last cut out the ECM and just started wiring the things that didn't work. I had to redo a lot of it.

Before you change any wiring for the fan.... Find the fan relay... should be the relay on the drivers side firewall, closest to the drivers door. Look at the wires going into the relay. Find a green wire with a white stripe. Run a jumber from that wire , and touch it to ground with the ignition on. This should activate relay and the fan should come on. IF the relay doesnt click, it is either bad or not getting power.

man, I read this other dude's post that had wiring issues. WHenever he hit the brakes the lights in the back didnt come on, but the parking lights did and the dash lit up. and something crazy happened with horn. i dont know.....But hey about the eletric fans, hypertech or jegs sells thermostats sensor speciificallly for the eletric fans setup, they turn on at 185 degrees and off at 180. or on at 166.

I went to summit and asked for one of those and they said that they didn't have them anymore. The guy prolly didn't know what I was talking about and didn't want to admit it. lol.

i recently bought a stock coolant temperture sensor from "auto(rip ya off)zone"hoping it will solve my problem, i have yet to work on it because its too hot, and at night it too quiet. maybe tomorrow ill fire lennet up to my surprise it works if not then pickup coil and tps is next on the list. But the sensor cost close to 19.89 after tax, but I also had a damaged wire connector. it costs 9buck along with a western union tie solder job and heat shrink, i put that dielectric grease on the -weather-pack connector for protection. its common to remove the alternator and intake.
