Are you talking about the switch located near the brake/gas pedal on top of the steering column or the cylinder that the key fits into?

Sounds like he's talking about the actual ignition/key switch, since the wires run through the column.
Just guessing, though!
In the past, I cut my existing wires and then I used a wire coat hangar and fished them through the collar on the steering column.
Old School!!!

The switch that is on the top of the steering column has 2 seperate plgs attached to it, from the right side. There is a aluminum plate on top that you just need to carefully pry up enough for you to unplug the cables. It will be a lot easier to unplug these cables, with the switch still attached to the column.
Hope this helps.

Cable not wires!!!!!!!!!

He is talking about the cable the is on the back part of the ignition switch. This cable runs to the shifter for automatic transmissions and acts like a neutral safety switch this is why your car will not start unless it is in park or neutral. To remove the cable you have to make sure the switch is in either acc or on position, this will release the tension from the plunger that holds the cable in place; remove the 2 small philips screws, which will free this cable assembly from the ignition switch. Then you will have a closer look at it and there should be a clip that has to be pressed to release the cable from the plastic housing. Most of the time when you get a new ignition switch it will have a new plastic housing already attached. Make sure the new ignition switch is in acc or on position (basically the middle 2 positions), then just put the cable back into the new housing and it will click into place. Finally, put the switch back into off position and put everything back together (last part easier said then done)... Hope this helps the next person that tries to do this on their own.
