I hope you guys can help me. I have a 91'GTA 5.0l TPI and one cable that cames out the fusible link that is directly after the positive pole from the battery is broken/melted. It's the main power cable for the fans. I don't know how to change the fusible link itself- one cable runs through it and goes straight to the alternator an two cables came out the fusible link and they run both in a plastic connector.

I bypassed the fan cable at the fusible link with an other fuse but the cable gets very hot at the fuse and a meter behind it, so I want to change the hole positive battery cable.

Where can I get the whole positive battery cable included the fusible link+ maybe the connector and the cable to the alternator?

I am not an expert, but I did have to replace some of my wiring as well because of it's poor condition, and this included the positive battery cable. As for the fusible links, I eliminated them based on the fact that someone told me it was ok to do so. You can, I believe, replace them with in-line fuses of the appropriate rating. Also, you should be able to reduce the temperature of the wire in question by replacing it with a large gauge wire, since that will reduce the resistance.

Perhaps if the wire is getting that hot, there is a problem in the circuit?

I'am afraid to cut off the whole fusible link because the lower wire goes straight to the alternator- so it's the main power cable.

I don't think that there's a problem with the circuit- the cbale only gets hot from the new conection and maybe a half meter behind. I think when I had a circuit somewhere the whole cable will get hot- or? Maybe the fusible link is a resisantace too?

 

When I go back out to my TA, I will take a pic of what I did. I'm not sure my problem was identical to yours, but my wiring was a mess from some previous monkey owner. I ended up running a very large gauge wire (can't recall exactly what size, but about as thick as a pencil) directly from the positive battery terminal to the alternator.

I think your idea is good of finding someone who had a similarly equipped car and having them cut off the wiring you need, with enough length on all the ends for you to splice in as you see fit.

If I can find the GM part number for the positive battery cable, I will see if I can find out if it is available from GM still. I bought my replacement cable from NAPA...it is of very good quality, and contained one lead wire as well.

 

A fusible link is just a wire of sufficiently small size so as to burn off before the wire it's connected to melts. Replacing them with fuses is ok.
How is the circuit made up inside the fusible link sheath? Is there maybe a connection between the upper and lower circuit inside there?
Did the (hot) wire look corroded? Maybe it has reduced area there?
