im not sure if something is wrong with my distributor or not. I pulled the cap off to find alot of rust had flaked of the piece just below the rotor button. I took the distributor out and tried turning it but it seems to have sticking points is it suppost to do that? or move freely? and more rust flaked off while i turned it. Its a remote coil hei if it matters...thanks in advance!

Check the amount of radial and axial play in the shaft. If there is any noticable radial play (more than a few thousandths) the upper bearing is shot. If there is more than 0.040" of axial play (about 1mm) the shaft should be shimmed.

The distributor should rotate freely with no sticking. If there is interference due to inadequate clearance between the pickup coil poles and reluctor (moving pole piece) you'll need to shim the distributor shaft upward and/or realign the pickup coil.

sticking points is the magnet and points in the rotor, it is normal

ypoure worrying too much

what you need to do is take an air compressor and blast out the HEi real good real quick and take some silicone lubricant spray or electrical spray and spray everything under there down real good and blast it again with air real quick and put the rotor and cap back on

also put a drop of motor oil on both of the advance weight pads if you have a non computer HEI

and if you do then make sure the advance weight springs ar ein good shape and that the weights will swing out without any hangups
