Newbie with Electrical Problem--Help
Ok, here's a new one.
I have a 1987 Trans AM (probably want to know that)
The other day I was driving the kids to school--YEA!!-- and I noticed a hot smell in the car. I checked connections and nothing seemd amiss i.e., didn't see any melting or melted wires. Drove to the local Wallyworld for stuff and then to another nearby town for more stuff..No problems noticed. The next day I go to leave for work and DEAD BATTERY. Ok, I figured it was a wasted battery--4-1/2 on a 5 year, so I changed it out. When I hooked up the new battery, I found the blower motor for the heater was trying to run (with the Key NOT ON), and I found a small melted part on the connector, don't know how old it is. So I disconnected the wire to the blower fan. Next morning, DEAD BATTERY. NOW the interesting part. I figure I have a Major drain somewhere dropped out the lower covers under the dash and looked around, NOTHING AMISS. I hooked up the battery charger then hooked up the blower fan again and had it still trying to run I got in the car and the Heater fan started running....without the ignition being turned on.
I pulled the heater A/C control switch from the center console and disconnected the heater switch. Then I hooked up the charger again and found that the fan blower had no power. I connected the switch again and the fan came on..again without the key.
Is this a switch problem or could it be a short in the wiring still sending power to the switch. I want to say a switch problem, since there shoulod not be ANY power going to the blower fan without the key in the ON position. IN addition to this, I noticed that WITH the KEY OFF, the power windows are functioning too...This should not be happening.
Any Help would be appreciated.

O. K. Additional info...The radio doesn't come on like the power windows and the blower fan does..Does that matter?
Also, I've changed out the ignition switch itself in the past, are we talking about the socket the switch goes into, or something further down the steering column?
Thanks again

I am talking about the electrical switch down at the bottom of the column. The electrical contacts can overheat and stick. You will want to check for power on the orange wire when the key is off. If the is power there with the key off unplug the switch and check again. If there is still power there the wire is shorted somewhere and if there is no power the switch is stuck on. Mike
Thanks for the help-I appreciate it
I'll give it a looksee now that I have a few days off. I looked earlier and didn't see any switches, just a couple of connectors. Are these what you are talking about--One does have an orange wire sticking out of it.
Thanks again, Jim
