need general wiring help for starting/running system
Well I just bought a 84 RX-7 with a Chevy 350 in her.
She runs great, pulls hard, and I just bought a T-56 for her.
The only thing that is bugging me is the electrical.
It looks like a rushed hack job with tons of loops.
It is a carb motor with a mechanical fuel pump so
from what I gathered the general wiring for the starting and running
system should look something like this if I rewire it all myself.
(see pic)
now for the Questions
1. The (chock & check relay) is it needed?
the carb has a automatic choke on it
so can I bypass the fuse? If so do I just
leave the wire off or splice it to something?
2. Should I put a fuse in for the alt and coil connection?
or is putting them in solid ok? how big of a fuse?
3. Should I have the ground lead for the battery go all the way to the engine and then ground it or should I just ground the battery to the floor
and the engine to the firewall.
4. I should run 10g wire for the main alt out
and for the starter start lead right?
5. Anything that is plain wrong you see, any helpful tips, or wires I'm missing, will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, JR

1: Never seen the wiring of such a relay, don't know what it does..
Some cars use an oil pressure switch to supply current to the choke so it doesn't go off before you get the car started. Fuses are often beneficial, but if this fuse fails then the choke will come on while you drive, so if you use one it should be connected in a way that makes you observant of it's failure.
2: I would fuse the blue alt. circuit (10-20 Amps) but not the coil supply.
3: Ground battery to directly to engine, for starting and charging currents. Run a smaller wire from engine to frame, for accessory current (30-50 Amps).
4: The alt. can deliver around 80-120 Amps. The starter can draw around 300-400 Amps on the red wire and 30-40 Amps on the yellow wire (in your diagram). Wire guage depends on this current, the wire length, and the allowable voltage drop.
5: Route the red alt. wire straight to the starter (or the battery, if much closer), not to ignition switch or mid-wire somewhere.
Where does the black wire from the starter go? Is it from the third terminal that's usually used with resistor coils?

Thanks, for your help all keep those things in mind.
I'm going to wire it tonight so all let you all know how it turns out.
Thanks, JR

everything went great and without a hitch
I got it and started her up on the first try.
thanks for your input and wish me luck on the rest on the nightmare
i.e. headlights, flashers, taillights
o well off I go.
All post a picture and update my little drawing,
with what I change, once its all cleaned up.
Cheers,
JR
