setting timing on a v-belt set-up(no tab, everything in way)
well I have a couple problems.
I finally got my car started but it won't idle below 2000rpm
I wore in my new cam then shut it off.
exhaust was very hot and rpm danced around when running.
Is my timing too advanced or restarted?
I was going to check but: (picture)
1. no timing tab
2. water pump sets right on top of the timing cover
can timing be checked at 2000rpms or do I mess with it by hand till it settles?
Is there a timing light I can buy that has a remote mount light
and can I buy or put a tab on the timing cover?
looking for a little help
Also my carb is leaking fuel after shut-off I think that might of
influenced my idle problem too, I'm going to check the floats tomorrow.
Also any idea on how far I should advance my timing
I got:
comp cam XE 268:
Operating Range: 1600-5800 RPM
Duration Advertised: 268° Intake / 280° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 224° Intake / 230° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.5 Rockers: .477'' Intake / .480'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 110°
#1405 650cfm Edelbrock Performer Carb
Mallory unlite distributor (no vacuum advance)
running around 11:1 compression (need to crunch the #'s)
with 89 octane
I know the "advance till it pings then retared" how loud is the ping?
Is it really noticeable?
Thanks to all, JR

You could probably get a bolt-on timing pointer to work with your timing cover and balancer. You'd probably want to check your TDC with a piston stop though to make sure that the pointer is correct.
As far as seeing it, just lean over and look like everyone else does.
