i bought a new distributor for my 89 350 camaro today ,i marked the old one to spots on the firewall and motor.however ,when i got it home it doesn't line up to my marks.! so now what should i do? it's about a eighth to a quarter inch off. it's the shaft that isn't lining up.

 

You might want to try turning the rotor button counter clockwise a little before you drop it in the hole.

As the dist. gear meshes with the cam gear it will turn the dist. shaft and cause it to turn clockwise and throwing your alignment off.

You might also have to turn the oil pump shaft slightly for everything to line up again. I use a big screw driver and a good light.
