Tach wiring help needed
I recently bought an 83 t/a and the stock tach is WAY off (3 grand or so). So i hit up jegs and bought a 3 3/4 in autogage tach to put in. A buddy of mine and i went to put it in this afternoon and we were both stumped on how to wire it up. The autometer direction were what i exspected them to be so i searched the forums and didnt find what i was looking for. So heres what i was wondering...is it possible to tap into the harness of wires that lead into the circuit board of the instrument cluster? and if so what can i hook up to it (tach signal, 12v lighting source, 12v ign, ground) and what color are these wires? this is my 2nd 3rd gen but its my first post. And just to let you know i hate electrical work, the word "wiring" makes me crap my pants. Thanks, Jim

I`m no mechanic or electrician but i figured mine out on my tpi.i FOUND A GOOD GROUND,found a place in the fuse block for the lights and the power. This was all the easy part. The harder part, and it may be differny on our car,was finding were to hook up the wire to get the tach/rpm signal. On my car it was a white wire. What kind of coil do you have?I`m not familiar wiyh the l03 set ups.Is it an externally mounted coil or in cap coil. How many connectors does your coil have to it if its extenally mounted.I have two white wires going to my coil on one of the two connectors. The other side has two pink wires. It`s not either of those two white wires. There is another white wire coming from the coil or distributer(I cant remember, its been awhile and i have the msd box wired in too)Anyway that was the one i needed.TRIAL AND ERROR.i endded up trying all the white wires till i got the right one and it was the last one i tried that was the right one.Someone had to tell me the white wire was the tach lead cause i couldnt find it in the Chilton manual.

Thanks Shadygrady. My car is an Lg4 and i found the factory tach lead, it is a white wire. What did u use as far as the 12v light, and ignition source in the fuse box and what did u use as a good ground? also where did u tap into the white tach wire, or did u connect it directly to the coil/distributer. Im pretty sure i have in coil dist.
