Ignition : Crane or MSD ???
Hi,
I would like to add an ignition box and new coil to my car.
But don't really know a lot about it.
So wich one is best ?
Crane, MSD or something else.
And why ?

I have the mds system on mine, and love it. The only problem i ran into with it was finding a place to mount the coil. with that solved, i love the system. going from stock hei to this made a really big difference on my motor. Its used to fall on its face arround 4krpm, and now it will just fly past 4k and keep going like its nothing. I got the super hei kit. all i did was remove the stock internals of the hei, and hook it up. BIG difference.

Unless you've got a modified engine that turns high RPM or has high cylinder pressures, you won't see any benefit from either. Save your money and keep the stock ignition.

I think I will go to MSD.
They are cheaper then crane.
Mallory is even more cheap, but don't really know the performance of these ones.
Thank's all for helping out.

Like the man said, on a stock or near stock engine benefits are minimal...its mostly dress. I put in a Crane as I got it real cheap, looks nice with the flashy wiring, but?

OK,
Here's the story :
The engine is near stock, it has the vortec cilinderheads and weiand action+ manifold.
A cam is planned in the future.
The thing is that this engine most of the time runs on LPG (propane).
Only for starting and when the LPG-reservoir is empty, the engine runs on gas.
An LPG engine likes to have a big spark, bigger is better here.
This is the reason why I want an ignition upgrade.
I now saw that the MSD is analog, and crane is digital.
What would be best ?
Crane is more expensive, but is it worth it ?
Thank's for the reply's

Dieter..analog or digital either way the gain I think would be small..I do not believe that digital would offer you much over the analog. Certainly you would gain on cold starts and some mileage with either but bear in mind that the HEI stock system is quite good when all is working well. Any gains are marginal (3-5%) my guess. I'm not a LPG expert but I heard that they are hard on plugs, a very serious thing on a 3G? Actually I got most of my engine improvements by Proming the ECM, catback & KN filters.

Thank's,
The catback is on it's way, it takes a few months to get it here in belgium.
Proming the ECM is also in development, I am learning a lot these days.
First I'm going to tune the engine when it is running on gas.
Then I need a switching divice so I can switch to another .bin for driving on LPG.
The LPG-.bin is a spark-only program, like a carb.
I also think this is gonna get me the most improvement, but when I install the ignitionbox later, I can start all over again tuning the prom.

A CD ignition system actually produces a smaller, weaker spark than an inductive system. That's why they use multiple strikes at low RPM, because they need to. Is that going to work with your needs?

Hmmm, I did not know this.
Now I'm not sure annymore what I want/need.
Maybe I should go with some good wires (MSD spiral core) and the MSD blaster coil.
And forget about the ignition box.
